HUD Announces Green Retrofit Program for Multifamily Housing
(June 01, 2009) As a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, HUD recently announced assessing $250 million for loans or grants for energy retrofits and green investment projects for owners of Section 202, Section 811 and Section 8 properties. Green Building is an approach to sustainable development that is designed to result in a property that reduces energy demand, costs less to operate, improves the residents' quality of life, and reduces its impact on the environment. A Green Retrofit means a retrofit, acceptable to HUD, that has one or more of the following attributes:
- Materially lower electric / heating fuel / water consumption.
- Materially lower emissions of chemicals thought to be harmful to humans.
- Materially longer useful life.
- Materially more biodegradable.
- Materially more easily recycled.
- Materially lower use of raw materials/materially more recycled content.
- Materially lower transportation costs of products delivered to the project.
Applications will be accepted by HUD on a first come, first served basis beginning June 15, 2009. Qualifying projects include, but are not limited to:
- Energy-Star rated refrigerators, dishwashers and HVAC units*
- High-efficiency domestic hot water heaters*
- Energy-Star rated windows, sliding doors and exterior doors*
- Low-Flow aerators, faucets, shower-heads and toilets
